Care Assistant

Care Home Administrator

Jessica james administrator looking and smiling at the camera in a purple polo shirt I support the Care Home Manager with all the administration at the home. This includes for example completing forms for new residents and staff, collating the residents’ activity calendar, paying invoices, helping to manage the budget, completing and submitting payroll and liaising with support services in Seaford.

I’m the first point of contact for everyone who walks through the door so I welcome friends and families of residents, doctors, nurses, tradesmen and I take care of all the telephone calls. Some of my colleagues say “I’m the glue that holds the home together!”

This is a very busy role and I have the freedom to complete my work, be with the residents and interact with staff. We’re a good team here.

Maintenance

maintenance man kneeling down to check fire extinguisher I take care of the day to day maintenance of the building making sure all the checks have been done, including fire and gas safety and electrical testing. My role also includes tasks such as unblocking shower wells, checking light bulbs and cleaning the bins. There is generally a lot of cleaning involved and ensuring everything is in working order. I also decorate rooms when they become vacant.

I enjoy spending time talking to residents when I’m working in their rooms and supporting the care team. I may have my week planned out but sometimes my work can be very reactive, you never really know what you’re going to walk into in the morning, this is why I love working here.

I have enjoy the opportunity to do activities with residents such as gardening, indoor play and dancing. Outside of work, DIY is my main hobby.

Scheme Manager

Lady with blonde hair and glasses I love working with older people and hearing their life’s experiences. I enjoy enriching their golden years - making them easier and more pleasurable.

I've worked in a variety of care settings for many years. Care in the Community with profoundly physically disabled people and some with brain acquired injuries, before I started at Sussex Housing & Care.

Since working here I have been a manager at Saxonwood Care Home and then moved to become a Scheme Manager.

I enjoy providing a high standard of service to residents."

Fiona, Scheme Manager for Ashleigh Glegg House and Falfield in Seaford.

Sebi is a Senior Care Assistant and tells us about his role

Sebi is a Senior Care Assistant who works at Saxonwood Care Home in Battle. He told us about his role and what it's like to work at Saxonwood...

“I moved to England from Romania three years ago and since I arrived I have worked as a care assistant and have been promoted to a senior carer.

When I first started as a carer, I worked for a care agency. I would visit different care homes and often worked 60 hours a week, I enjoyed working but I didn’t get any sick leave or paid holiday.

I was an agency member of staff at Saxonwood for some time and then I decided to become a permanent employee at the Sussex Housing & Care owned home. In my role as a senior care assistant, I have to lead the care team, liaise with visiting health professionals and make sure the correct medication is given to residents. I have to give mental effort to my role, making sure everything is done safely and properly.

These days people are tending to come into a care home later in life and with higher needs, so over the years I have gained a lot of experience.

The team here at Saxonwood is great, we work together well. I am always open with our management and we can easily feedback and share ideas, Sigita and Roxi are great at listening and supporting us.

The values of Sussex Housing & Care are good, I am able to develop and learn, and there are opportunities for promotion. I’m about to start studying a Level 3 in Health and Social Care and would like to get to Level 5.

The residents really matter to us, there is always lots going on which is brilliant and something I didn’t see in other care homes. I love the time I spend with residents and making them smile, especially when we’re all having a party or celebration together. We plan our residents activities with them and their families, and also with the staff team. I loved getting involved and taking part, it’s really good.

By having lots on at Saxonwood the carers can have a different focus on their role, apart from the daily routine, and it feels like you’re not at work, you’re having a good time with residents.

We build such a good relationship with residents, I get told off by them if I don’t say good night when I leave! But this makes me feel really valued and part of the Saxonwood family.”
