Supporting Dementia Action Week

It’s Dementia Action Week! We’ve been celebrating living well with dementia and sharing our knowledge about dementia with families and visitors.
We’ve been reminiscing at our vintage tea party at Saxonwood Care Home in Battle, eating some classic cream tea delights together with family and friends!

It’s been a toe tapping, hand clapping week across our care homes with residents taking part in musical activities. We’ve enjoyed instrumental bingo at Oakwood Court Care Home in Haywards Heath where we listened out for certain instruments and at Woodlands Care Home in Crowborough we had a wonderful visit from the 15 members of the Crowborough U3A Ukulele Group. Maureen, who lives at Woodlands, also enjoyed a visit to the Crowborough Community Church to see the U3A choir perform who were fantastic. We know how much music stimulates the mind and makes us all smile!

At Saxonwood care home, Wendy our Activities Co-ordinator led an informative Dementia Friends workshop for families and staff to help understand what it’s like to live with dementia. Wendy shared ‘the bookcase analogy’ describing memory loss, and everyone shared their experiences of supporting residents and loved ones to live well with dementia.

We love tantalising our senses and there was no better way to do this than in the garden! We watered plants and smelt the divine herb garden at Saxonwood. At Oakwood Court we tasted a variety of exotic fruit which got our taste buds working overtime! We compared textures and sweetness and talked about where they might be grown and when we might use them.

Exercise stimulates our mind and body, so we got moving and dancing with the pom poms to some 60s summer hits at Woodlands care home as well as dancing to our favourite songs throughout the week!
