Saxonwood residents enjoy a taste of Romania

As we have quite diverse team of staff, and with our residents asking lots of questions about languages, heritage and traditions, we thought it would be a great idea to share. This activity was to give the residents an overview of Romania and its traditions. The staff showed a beautiful documentary about the country itself and a snippet of its history, Romania is very famous for these. They tasted traditional wines and cakes handmade and brought in by some of our Romanian staff members. The staff put together a traditional dance and showcased this to the residents along with Romanian music. The atmosphere was amazing and some of the residents spoke about how they felt transported to Romania.

When we speak about our home lands and where we are from it opens up a barrier between people, the residents tell us stories and dreams they have experienced or wished for, this allows us to get to know them as an individual, gain an idea of their own identity.

This activity allowed the residents to explore and get to know some of our staff, who they are, where they grew up and what experiences they have encountered. The impact of this activity has built a sense of community within the home.

As everyone is aware during this pandemic the residents have had to make a lot of sacrifices, unable to hug family and friends, access the community and much more. Saxonwood home wants to be able to bring happiness and wellbeing to our residents. This activity did just that, the residents have been talking about this evening for a few weeks now, talking amongst each other and also to their families, this is a great reassurance to relatives that their loved ones are happy and safe. The outcome of this ‘above and beyond’ activity is a sense of togetherness, the Romanian staff really pulled it out of the bag and worked hard to make this a success. The residents feel like they know more about our staff and have expressed how much this day really brightened their smiles, “being whisked away to another land was nothing short of a fairy tale”.
