What's it like living in a care home? One resident reveals all...

Patricia is 93 years old and moved into Saxonwood care home, Battle, in April of this year. Here she shares her experience of her move into the home and how she has found it so far...

“I had a heart attack in April and was taken to the Conquest, where they told my son I wouldn’t be able to cope on my own. I was living in a flat in Battle and wanted to stay in the area, so we came to have a look at Saxonwood and were very lucky to get in straight away.

Saxonwood is a nice home and has beautiful gardens. I often sit out and, in the summer, sat out every day. Some of the activities are super. Jade, the Activities Co-ordinator takes me out every Wednesday and I take her to the church lunch every other week.

I enjoy sitting and looking out of my window, some of the little children wave at me as they go to school. I read quite a lot and listen to music and concerts; my son brought my tapes so I listen to these quite a lot.

I wouldn’t change anything here, I’m very lucky and have such a lovely room. The carers are the best thing about Saxonwood, they work very hard and they are so lovely.

We have a new Chef who is very nice. I have promised to share some tips with her as I worked nine years as a Catering Officer in Birmingham Children’s Hospital.

They do look after us well.

The one piece of advice I would offer if you are moving into a home would be to sit back and listen. The staff really are very nice, and I think because I was determined to get on with things I settled in very quickly.”

If you or a loved one are looking for a short stay at Saxonwood, we are currently offering one week free of charge to those staying with us for two weeks or more between now and 28 February 2020.
