College students visit Oakwood Court for valuable real-world experience
Today students studying Health and Social Care at Haywards Heath College visited staff and residents at Oakwood Court care home in Haywards Heath for a morning of conversation, exploration and togetherness!
The morning began with talks from our fabulous Senior Carers, inspiring young people to consider volunteering or working with us, and they shared how rewarding a career in care can be.
Residents and students then spent time together enjoying a range of engaging activities, including creative stencil painting and a much-loved “All about me” session. During these conversations, students asked residents about their lives, favourite memories, and the things that mean the most to them – sparking some heart-warming discussions.
We've received some wonderful feedback from Eloise, the tutor at the College:
"All my students agreed that it was an incredibly enriching experience. They found the day both rewarding and enjoyable, and it was wonderful to hear how much they gained from spending time with your residents and staff.
The written activity, where students were able to ask questions and get to know the residents, was particularly valuable. It provided them with meaningful information that has directly supported their coursework, helping them complete a one-page profile as part of their studies. The painting activity was also a real highlight. Students enjoyed the creative aspect, but it also gave them practical insight into how to encourage independence while providing appropriate support.
Several students commented that the experience has helped them better understand the differences between a residential care home and a nursing home. Many admitted they had misconceptions beforehand, but the visit challenged these assumptions, built their confidence, and opened their eyes to this career pathway. Two students have said they intend to apply as volunteers, while others have expressed that they would love to return in the future.
Overall, the visit was a fantastic opportunity that gave our students valuable real-world experience and was truly a highlight of our year!"
The event was a real team effort, from the orgnisation and planning, to the HR materials and support, delicious refreshments from the catering team and presence and engagement from the staff team at Oakwood Court.
Thank you to the wonderful group from Haywards Heath College for bringing such positivity, enthusiasm, and kindness into our home and to everyone involved, we're already looking forward to their next visit!
