"Hearing that I've been shortlisted bought tears to my eyes. I was shocked to be nominated and being near to retirement age after 48 years working in care, I wasn't expecting anything like this."
A big congratulations to Maureen, our General Assistant at Oakwood Court care home in Haywards Heath, who has been shortlisted for the 'Unsung Hero' award at the West Sussex Partners in Care Accolades!
Maureen continued: "To read the words about me and what people think, was really nice, I especially like the reference to me being the 'mum of mums'! I have such a good relationship with everyone and treat residents how I'd like my Mum to be treated. It's a pleasure to do my job, every day is different and I thoroughly enjoy the work. Every day continues to be a learning curve, something different crops up!
I especially enjoy encouraging and supporting young people starting out in their career in care. Some days aren't as good as others, but we're all here together with the same goals, a positive attitude and a real team effort.
Naturally I'm quite nervous about the awards ceremony but it's also really exciting and I'm delighted to have got this far and be able to celebrate with colleagues. It will be amazing to go and experience an awards ceremony as this is something I've never done and I want to say thank you to Bindu, our Care Home Manager, and everyone for your kind words. I'm really thankful to be able to have this opportunity."
Good luck at the awards ceremony on 22 May Maureen!
Big congratulations also go to Charlie, Domestic Assistant, and Maricel, Care Assistant, who were both nominated for delivering an excellent service to residents, going the extra mile and taking pride in the support they give to individuals.
Charlie, Maricel and Bindu will accompany Maureen to the awards next week, for a fun and celebratory evening together and we wish Maureen all the best in her 'unsung hero' category!
