Sustainability - reducing our environmental impact

At Sussex Housing and Care, sustainability is about creating a better future for our residents, colleagues, communities and the environment. We are committed to reducing our environmental impact while improving the quality, comfort and affordability of our homes and care services. Our vision is to become a more sustainable organisation by reducing carbon emissions, improving energy efficiency and promoting environmentally responsible practices across everything we do.

How do we support sustainability?

Our sustainability journey includes investing in energy-efficient homes, reducing waste, embracing digital solutions and encouraging greener ways of living and working. We have introduced initiatives such as hybrid working, paperless care systems, LED lighting upgrades, improved insulation, recycling programmes and support for electric vehicle use. These actions help lower our carbon footprint while delivering long-term benefits for residents and colleagues.

Across our housing schemes and care homes, sustainability is embedded into daily life. Residents and staff take part in recycling initiatives, food waste reduction, community gardening, biodiversity projects and energy-saving campaigns. Care homes have introduced sustainability champions, vegetable gardens, waste segregation and annual sustainability audits to identify opportunities for continual improvement.

Sharing ideas

We survey our care staff every year to ask them for ideas and suggestions in ways we can improve our sustainability. We support the annual national campaign 'Plastic Free July'

Energy performance

We are also committed to improving the energy performance of our homes. Recent achievements include securing funding for decarbonisation projects, upgrading properties to higher EPC ratings, installing energy-efficient lighting and heating systems, solar power and exploring renewable technologies that support our journey towards net zero.

Sustainability is a shared responsibility, and we work closely with residents, staff, partners and local communities to make a positive difference. Through education, engagement and practical action, we are building healthier homes, stronger communities and a greener future for generations to come.
